On the Road with Silver John: "Can These Bones Live?"

"Can These Bones Live?"

Not far beneath the earth of Chaw Hollow farm
An intact, outsized skeleton has been found.
But good intentions lead to a bad end when
The locals try to re-bury the body in holy ground.

The bony bogey is accidentally quickened
And immediately seeks to put meat on its frame.
John stands to become dinner if he can't beat
The maneater back into the grave whence its came.

Manly Wade Wellman's short story "Can These Bones Live?" can be found in Owls Hoot in the Daytime and Other Omens.
